AeroFly Campus General Aviation Outreach Program

AeroClub recently visited Lingnan Dr. Chung Wing Kwong Memorial Secondary School to deliver a session of the “AeroFly Campus General Aviation Outreach Program” — an Introduction to Paragliding. This session combined aviation science with hands-on experience, offering students a fresh perspective on the principles and possibilities of flight.

The class began with the seemingly simple yet profound question: “Why can airplanes fly?” From there, students were introduced to core aerodynamic concepts such as lift, glide ratio, and angle of attack. Through real competition footage, flight clips, and accessible explanations, students gained a clear understanding of the science behind flight, while also learning the differences between paragliders and conventional aircraft.

After the theory segment, students worked in groups to handle actual paragliding equipment, learning how to open and pack the wing, identify line systems, and conduct basic gear checks. A harness simulation station allowed students to experience the seated flying posture and weight-shift control in a safe indoor setting. The atmosphere was highly engaging, with many students actively asking questions and showing enthusiastic participation.

For many, it was their first time seeing a real paraglider up close. Some expressed surprise at the depth of science behind unpowered flight, while others later searched for videos and information online, showing growing interest in ground handling, tandem experiences, and even future studies in aerospace engineering.

All teaching materials were based on the AeroFly syllabus, which focuses on aerodynamics and meteorology as its core themes. The program aims to build a foundational understanding of flight and inspire future pursuits in aviation, logistics, research, or engineering.

AeroClub will continue working with schools to bring aviation education into classrooms, helping young minds explore the intersection of science, technology, and the natural world — and to open doors to new possibilities.
